It is very, very important to identify plants and roots correctly because it can be very dangerous if you don't. Most people know this about mushrooms, but there are a lot of types of mushrooms that look almost exactly alike with only one small detail that is different. Well that one little detail can save your life because one of those mushrooms can be poisonous and the other you can eat. This is exactly the same for plants too. For example a Poison Sumac looks really close to a regular Sumac which can treat some diseases. Confusing these to plants can be very harmful to your body.
It would be prudent to know a variety of species from different regions when dealing with natural medicine and food because you won't always be in the same region with the same plants. There are five regions in the USA and all of them have their unique climate, animals, and plant life.
It would also make a significant difference if you traveled in different seasons because not all plants are year-round. Some might only live in the spring and summer and then die off in the fall and winter while some might only survive in the colder days.
It would be significant to develop a relationship with the local people because about their plant habitat because they have lived there all their life and probably know a lot about the plants and the environment. They can tell you what berries you can eat, for example. They can also tell you which plants treat a certain disease and what roots treat what.
If I was found without traditional medicine I would trust my reference text of local flora to treat illness and disease because before normal medicine people used plants and herbs to treat illnesses in people throughout human existence. Also to create traditional medicine, scientists use the same chemical properties that are in the plants. In fact, in order to create any medicine scientists get their chemicals from the plant they used to see if a certain chemical treats a certain disease.
